Formerly, the Sale of Goods Act 1893 (UK) applied throughout Nigeria as an Act of general application. This Act, which has been replaced in the United Kingdom with the Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended), has also been replaced in many parts of Nigeria with local sale of goods laws enacted in different states. Despite the remarkable similarities in the provisions of the local laws reflecting the common origin of these laws, there are some dissimilarities which pose the problem of reconciliation of the laws in transactions that cut across states with different provisions on vital subjects. To help the reader to appreciate the enormity of these problems, some of the existing laws are reproduced as appendices with annotations.

The first edition of this book was published in 2006 by Chenglo Limited, Enugu, Nigeria under the title, Commercial Law: Sale of Goods, Hire-Purchase and Carriage of Goods by Sea. The current book incorporates some information from the Sale of Goods component of the first edition. It is focused on sale of goods to make room for an in-depth examination of the core principles of this subject.
